With a history that spans more than 2,000 years, the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister during the Warring States period. When his warnings about government corruption went unheeded and his country was plunged into chaos, he jumped into the Miluo River in despair. Legend says that local people rowed out in their boats to retrieve him and that to keep the fish from eating his body, they threw cooked rice dumplings into the river. This has given rise to dragon boat races and eating zongzi, traditions still observed today. In cities all over China, dragon boat races are part of the celebration. Long, narrow boats adorned with dragon designs are propelled in perfect unison by teams of rowers. It’s not just a great spectacle, but it also teaches people cooperation and teamwork.
Another much-loved practice is eating zongzi, steamed rice dumplings wrapped tightly inside bamboo leaves, in both sweet and salty varieties. During the Dragon Boat Festival, these treasures, filled with red bean paste, marinated meats, salted egg yolk, and others, are always a favorite with young and old alike.
