The majority of print quality issues arise from the improper handling or contamination of the components rather than faulty components themselves. The two most important consumables for creating an image are the Charge Roller and OPC Drum. When toner, fingerprint oils, or paper fibers contaminate these parts, you will almost certainly have defects on the page during printing.
The HonHai Technology team provided this practical and clear step-by-step guide for properly assembling and cleaning these components.
Print quality will suffer from a contaminated OPC Drum or Charge Roller if:
*Printing results show background shading (gray, dark).
*There are repeating spots (ghosting).
*Toner density is uneven (varies).
*There are random streaks (marks).
Cleaning is the most effective way to restore print quality and extend the life of the component.
Helpful Hints to Remember Before You Begin
*Keep away from strong light sources; since OPC drums are light-sensitive, ensure that you work in a shaded area.
*Use gloves to avoid contaminating the drum surface with natural skin oil.
*Never use alcohol to clean your OPC Drum because this is a common practice and will ruin the photosensitive coating of the OPC Drum.
Steps to Disassemble and Clean OPC Drums
1. Remove the toner cartridge from the printer.
2 . Open the cartridge housing. (Depending on your model, it may vary.
3 . Locate the OPC Drum and release the retaining pins/clips from both ends.
4. Lift the drum straight up without tilting or scraping adjacent components.
5. If you are not able to clean the drum immediately, cover it with a clean sheet of paper until the drum can be cleaned.
If it seems like you have a stuck or tight part, stop! Forced parts can break gears and misalign them.
Steps To Cleaning The OPC Drum
*Use a soft, lint-free cloth or an OPC clean wipe dedicated to cleaning OPC drums.
*Wipe the drum surface in one straight direction with light pressure.
*Only if you have to, slightly dampen your cloth using distilled water only.
*Allow the drum to dry in the air before reinstallation.
If you notice any deep scratches, wear, or damage on your drum skin, then cleaning will not solve this, and you will need to replace it with a new drum.
Steps To Remove The Charge Roller
*The charge roller is located either under or next to the OPC drum.
*Carefully remove the charge roller from both ends.
*Avoid touching the rubber roller surface directly.
Steps To Clean The Charge Roller
*Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or mild-neutral cleaner to wipe the charge roller.
*Rotate the roller when you wipe it to ensure an even covering.
*Make sure the charge roller is fully dry before you reinstall it.
The charge roller is one of the most frequent culprits of background shading; thus, cleaning the charge roller typically returns immediate improvements.
The final Steps of Reinstallation Testing
*Reinstall the charge roller first and then the OPC drum.
*Ensure that the correct alignment of gears/pins occurred during reinstallation.
*Securely close the cartridge housing.
*Run a test print for the intended use and check if the print quality has improved.
Properly maintained and manufactured OPC drums/genuine charge rollers stand a better chance of lasting longer than non-genuine drums/rollers.
